Phonemes
Phonemes are the smallest units of sound in a language that can change the meaning of a word. In spoken language, phonemes are the distinct sounds that make up words. For example, the word "cat" is made up of three phonemes: /k/ /æ/ /t/. Changing any one of these phonemes would result in a different word.
There are approximately 44 phonemes in the English language, including consonant sounds like /b/, /s/, and /m/, as well as vowel sounds like /a/, /e/, and /i/. The number of phonemes can vary in different dialects of English.
Phonemic awareness, the ability to identify and manipulate phonemes in spoken words, is a crucial skill for learning to read. Phonemic awareness activities, such as blending, segmenting, and manipulating phonemes, help children develop their phonological skills, which are essential for becoming proficient readers and spellers.
